Welcome!

My current research interests are aligned along two different (but related) aspects:

• Web-Based Open Systems, including topics like Web Information Retrieval, Spam-Resilient Web-Scale Computing, Hypertext and Text Mining, and Online Social Networks

  and

• Distributed Data-Intensive Systems, including topics like Decentralized Data Management, Search and Sharing in Distributed Systems, and Location-Based Services

What's New:

• The deadlines for the OTM 2008 Federated Conferences are fast approaching. In particular, the CoopIS deadline for abstracts is June 8.

• We've begun a new project on Trusted Social Information Management. Take a look around for more information. Some of our initial work has resulted in publications at ICWSM, WWW, and JCDL.

• Our paper studying MySpace -- A Large-Scale Study of MySpace: Observations and Implications for Online Social Networks -- has been accepted to the International Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM '08). Acceptance rate: ~25% (20 out of ~80)

• This semester, I'm teaching Information Storage and Retrieval (CPSC 670). Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions.

• Four of our papers studying Web Spam have appeared recently:

  • S. Webb, J. Caverlee, and C. Pu. Characterizing Web Spam Using Content and HTTP Session Analysis. In the 4th Conference on Email and Anti-Spam (CEAS), 2007. Acceptance rate: 19% (15 regular papers out of 79)
  • J. Caverlee, S. Webb, and L. Liu. Spam-Resilient Web Rankings via Influence Throttling. In the 21st IEEE International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium (IPDPS) 2007. Acceptance rate: 26% (109 out of 419)
  • S. Webb, J. Caverlee, and C. Pu. Introducing the Webb Spam Corpus: Using Email Spam to Identify Web Spam Automatically. In the 3rd Conference on Email and Anti-Spam (CEAS), 2006. Acceptance rate: 36% (27 out of 74)

• The Webb Spam Corpus is live! It contains about 350,000 Web spam pages!
