Homework 1 [ETC 3 hours]
Due Thursday August, 30, 2007

Administrative (ETC 20 minutes):

  1. [220] Check your swipe card access: Your TAMU ID card should already be set up to allow you access to the computer lab located at HRBB 220. Go to 220 after class to confirm that your card works. If it does not, go to the helpdesk on the second floor of HRBB. (ETC 0-5 minutes)
  2. [220] Create a CS account: In order to log into a computer in 220, you need to have a CS account. Go to the helpdesk and fill out the “new user” form to create a CS account. (ETC 0-5 minutes)
  3. [220] Create your code directory: Log into one of the machines in 220 using your new CS account. Map a network drive to \\NTFiler\SR2007. Perhaps choose the letter “S” so that everyone has mapped the same letter for ease of reference in discussions. Inside of the folder SR2007, create a new directory with your name on it (choose a name that is clearly you, and with no spaces – your last name or your login name are good choices). (ETC: 5 minutes)
  4. [408-F] Create a CSDL account: In order to access class materials, you need a class CSDL account. Please contact Unmil Karadkar at unmil@csdl.tamu.edu to set up a CSDL account. Note that you will have to set up time to meet with him to get this fully set up. (If you already have a CSDL account, please don't get a second one.) (ETC 0-10 minutes)
  5. [Anywhere] Create a blog for use in this class: You will need a blog space to write up summaries and discussions for this class. Blogger or some other blog space is fine. Please email hammond at cs.tamu.edu the address of your blog (ETC 0-5 minutes)

[220] Pen Practice and Data Collection (ETC 20 minutes):

  1. Login: Please go to 220 and log into either a tablet computer or a computer with a Cintiq computer – make sure the pen works.
  2. Get comfortable with pen entry: Open up Paint. Draw for 5 minutes with the pen.
  3. Calibrate the pen: Go to “Start à Control Panel à Tablet and Pen Settings à Settings à Calibration”. Click Calibrate. Follow the directions and click in the middle of the cross.
  4. Get more comfortable with pen entry: Again, open up Paint. Draw for 5 more minutes with the pen.
  5. Open data collection website: Go to http://srl.csdl.tamu.edu/userstudies.html. Brandon Paulson created a user study for the class that will serve to give you some experience in the studies as well as provide data to be used in the course. Enter “pen” as the input device for both. You will be requested to enter your name if you are doing this for the class. You must put your real name to get credit for the study. Also, IRB rules require class data to be separated and removed from any research data as it is forced data.
  6. Perform “Math collection”

[Anywhere] Introdution (ETC 20 minutes): Create blog introduction page (blog entry 0). On the front page of your blog, please provide the following information:

  1. Photo: Please put a photo of yourself on the blog page.
  2. Name: First and last name
  3. Year: Are you an Undergrad/Masters/PhD/Other (explain if other). What year are you in your standing (e.g., 3rd year PhD student)
  4. Email: feel free to spell out in funny ways to prevent spammers
  5. Academic Interests: What topics are most interesting to you academically – feel free to be specific or general – it is okay if they change or if you don’t know, write what you are most interested in now.
  6. Relevant Experience: What have you done in CS/AI/SR/Programming Experience?
  7. Why are you taking this class?
  8. What do you hope to gain?
  9. What do you think you will be doing in 5 years?
  10. What do you think you will be doing in 10 years?
  11. What are your non-academic interests?
  12. Tell a fun story about yourself.
