Announcement (Tues, 28 Nov 2006): Final Exam Scheduled for Friday, Dec 8th from 3-5pm

Please note that the final exam for this course is scheduled for Friday, December 8th from 3-5pm. The exam will be cumulative, but will emphasize material covered since the midterm.

Announcement (Mon, 27 Nov 2006): HW#4 Assigned, Due Dec 5th at Midnight

Written homework #4 has been assigned and is available online here. This is the final written homework for the semester. It is due next Tuesday (12/05/2006) at midnight (with the usual one-hour grace period build into the online deadline).

Announcement (Weds, 15 Nov 2006): MP-3 Assigned, Due Dec 10th at Midnight

The third Machine Problem (MP-3) has been posted. It is available online here. Additional tips and instructions have been posted on the TA's website. The due date is December 10th at midnight. Please note that this deadline is firm; there will be no extensions. As with previous programming assignments, please start early and plan your time accordingly!

Course Catalog Description

Hardware/software evolution leading to contemporary operating systems; basic operating systems concepts; methods of operating systems design and construction; algorithms for CPU scheduling, memory management, and general resource allocation; process coordination and management; case studies of several operating systems.

This is a stacked course consisting of two sections that meet concurrently: CPSC 410 is the undergraduate section intended for computer science majors, and CPSC 611 is the graduate section intended for students outside of computer science. Graduate students within computer science or computer engineering should consider taking the core Operating Systems course CPSC 613 instead.

Textbook

Operating Systems Concepts, 7th Edition, by Silberschatz, Galvin, and Gagne, 2005. The textbook should be available at the bookstore in the Memorial Student Center (MSC).

Schedule

  • Lectures: Tues and Thurs from 11:10AM-12:25PM in CHEN Room 104
  • Tutorials: Weds at 8:00pm in HRBB 113 (Attendance Optional)
